He was a clinical pharmacologist, and served as president of the European Collegeof Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) from 1995 to 1998.He was a member of the boardof the World Psychiatric Association. He was also vice president of the InternationalFoundation for Mental Health and Neurosciences (IFMHN),coeditor of the journalEuropean Psychiatry, and member of the boards of Human Pharmacology,Neuropsychobiologie,Encephale, and Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience. His research was centered on issues in molecular biology in psychiatry,neuroim-munology and neurotransmission, and clinical psychopharmacology.Together with his col-laborators,he published many research papers on schizophrenia, mood disorders,attentiondeficit-hyperactivity disorder, somatoform disorders, and fibromyalgia.Over the last 20 years,I had regular monthly work sessions with Professor ManfredAckenheil, each lasting a couple of days.We shared our thoughts, and he helped me withhis advice. He was my friend and I was his;I appreciated and admired himhis personal-ity and his human qualities as well as his capacities as a researcher. He was modest andattentive to others, and he had a great interest in many achievements,in science and in otherintellectual challenges. He had an open mind;he recognized and accepted the differencesamong human beings.Of German descent,he had become a man of many cultures;he wasa true citizen of the world. It is this man whom we miss today, and whom I will continue to miss.My hope is forhis memory to endure in the minds of his friends and colleagues,so that his teaching is trans-mitted to the young researchers and clinicians who will shape the future of psychiatry.Jean-Paul MacherEditor-in-chief
